In 2018, Selections from Emerson's Essays: First Series [1841] and Second Series [1844] were reprinted. Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), an essayist, poet, and philosopher, was a key figure in American Transcendentalism, a philosophy that stressed the importance of self-reliance, introspection, and nature for humanity. He was also an astute critic of the dehumanizing effects of modern society, particularly the emerging industrialization, and he spread his ideas through numerous published essays and over 1,500 public lectures throughout the United States.
The six essays chosen from Essays, First Series (1841) and Essays, Second Series (1844) provide a peek into Emerson's moral idealism as well as a glimpse of the skepticism that later influenced his thinking. Along with the renowned essay "Self-Reliance," the selection includes "History," "Friendship," "The Over-Soul," "The Poet," and "Experience."
